Across the UK, many churches are entering a new phase of their story – one where tradition meets modern practicality. These cherished buildings, often centuries old, are more than places of worship. They’re community landmarks, full of memories, meaning and historical value. At LGM Building, we understand the responsibility of modernising churches while honouring their past.
Why Renovate a Church?
Church renovations are about more than just appearances. Over time, facilities can become outdated, inaccessible or inefficient. The need for better heating, lighting, or disabled access often drives projects forward. But at the heart of every renovation is a desire to future-proof the church – to ensure it continues to serve its congregation for years to come.
Many churches need:
- Accessible entrances and restrooms
- Modern heating, lighting and insulation
- Multi-use spaces for youth, events and community groups
- Restoration of historic materials and finishes
The goal is to create spaces that remain sacred, but are also safer, warmer and more usable.
The Queens Road Church Renovation: A Case Study
Our work at Queens Road Church in Llandudno is a perfect example of this balance in action. This late 1800s sandstone church had developed many signs of wear over its lifetime – from stained masonry to sloped floors and outdated access.
We were asked to transform the layout to better serve modern use, turning the building ‘around’ by relocating the main entrance and preaching area. One of the most important goals was to introduce fully inclusive disabled access. This required new flooring, structural steelwork, a flat-roofed entrance foyer and carefully considered internal access routes.
Throughout the project, we retained and restored historic elements wherever possible – including the iconic stonework at the front of the building. We also created additional spaces, including new bathrooms, a playroom and modern kitchen areas – giving this church the potential to serve both spiritual and community needs. We’re looking forward to getting this completed so that the congregation can enjoy the improvements.

What to Consider with Church Renovations
Every project is unique, but successful church renovations often include:
- Community input: These buildings are shared spaces, so engagement matters
- Phased work: To minimise disruption to worship and weekly activity
- Sensitive materials: To ensure historical character is respected
- Experienced builders: Those who understand the fabric of older buildings
